Purpose
Identifying how an idea can be realised
through differing production and delivery mechanisms is vitally
important in understanding what responsibilities and therefore
rewards each party within that cycle has attributed to them.
This model asks you to explore that in developing a business
idea, it is necessary to understand that there is more than
one way to bring a product or service to market.
In addressing questions that probe for information
on 'who manufactures the product'; 'who promotes it'; 'who
controls quality', is fundamental to the model. Participants
will need to address all these questions to begin to appreciate
the different business models that they can operate within.
These should have a direct relationship to their key motivators/drivers.
Participants should appreciate that working
within a model of production that runs counter to their key
motivations is likely to de-motivate them and consequently
create tensions within their business model.
Application
This model should be used when an appropriate idea has been
developed, and one shows potential to be developed further
within a business and professional production context. Stage
3 and 4 students would benefit most from this model. The application
should be linked to the development of practical work, the
investigation of manufacturing technologies and service providers,
and agencies within the relevant disciplines.
Although the terminology appears upon first
glance to be design orientated, the model should, could and
has been applied to Fine Art activities and business ideas
(see the Sorcha Dallas Case Study)
Introducing the model in Stage 3 would allow
individuals to understand its application and enable its further
use at Honours level in readiness for potential business activity
post graduation.
Duration
This session should be delivered within a suitable timeframe
to allow appropriate discussion, usually about 2 hours. The
facilitator should be sympathetic to the participant engagement
with the tasks and move the session on as appropriate
